From The Net (My April Trawl) Wednesday, Apr 14 2010

A few interesting items I have stumbled across…

Jennifer Anniston takes a jab at herself… and also Brad Pitt by association.

I went and saw “Love Exposure” the other day, a 4 1/2 hour long Japanese film Directed/Written by Shion Sono. Possibly one of the most bizarre, yet arguably one of the best, films I have seen of late. Read a really good review here, on my fave blog, Three Dice. See the movie trailer (with English subtitles) below:

This one’s a serious one. Following the murder of Eugene Terreblanche in South Africa, a racial debate got heated on a SA TV news set. Secretary General of the AWB Andre Visagie lost it, and became quite threatening and well, came off quite racist to be honest.

This is a video of a teenage girl speaking about depression and suicide. I think she is really brave, and has a big heart, to do this. Please watch.

A bit of a mix in there – enjoy.

Another Day, Another Jacket… Saturday, Apr 10 2010

Okay, so I might be turning into a jacket junkie. I bought another leather jacket today, but… IT’S JUST SO DAMN HOT! A gorgeous black leather jacket with a studded lapel design, cropped short. Kind of rock, kind of punk. Looks fantastic on, too.

And who would have thought I’d find it at Farmers?

Delicious And Easy Chicken Salad Tuesday, Apr 6 2010

This is the kind of salad that is so delicious that you forget you’re actually eating healthily! Quantities are based loosely on feeding two people only, but you can work it to fit your numbers.

You will need:

1 ) 2 x chicken breasts

2 ) Lemon juice (100 mls)

3 ) Garlic pepper

4 ) Half a head of iceberg lettuce (or whatever kind you prefer, of course!)

5 ) 2 x tomatoes

6 ) Half of a telegraph cucumber

7 ) A 50g bag of pine nuts

8 ) Feta cheese (I use about half a block, but you may like more/less)

9 ) Capsicum/Peppers (either red, green or yellow)

10 ) Soy sauce

11 ) Honey

12 ) Cajun spice

13 ) Red onion

Cut the chicken breasts up into bite-sized pieces and put them into a bowl. Marinate the raw chicken in the lemon juice, four tablespoons of soy sauce and a drizzle of honey. Put into the fridge for a few hours if you have time, as this will help the flavor absorb, but if you don’t have time you can just cook the chicken straight away.

While the chicken is finishing marinating, cut up your salad items (lettuce, tomatoes, capsicum, red onion and cucumber) and put into a salad bowl.

Panfry the chicken pieces, sprinkling with the cajun spice and garlic pepper, until fully cooked and then put on a plate to cool. While you wait for this, very lightly panfry the pine nuts with a tablespoon of olive oil until they start to turn a light brown. Add the chicken and the pine nuts to the salad mix and toss together. The last addition is the feta cheese. Cube the cheese and toss through the salad just before serving. Easy peasy.

Bon apatite!

The Easter Bunny Told Me To Monday, Apr 5 2010

Easter weekend is, unfortunately, over. I got no chocolate, but I figured that meant the Easter Bunny wanted me to go shopping instead. *Cough*

I got a few gorgeous things from Glassons which have me grinning from ear to ear! Check out my new jacket! The picture shows that of a black jacket, but I got mine in gray as I already have a few black jackets hanging in my closet already. It’s short, finishes around my ribs, but I have a small waist so it suits my body shape to a T!

Glassons ZINA CROP BIKER JACKET NZD$79.99

I also bought two belts from Glassons, to go with the jacket. I purchased the same belt twice – as it came in both black and silvery-gray. It’s a long, thin, studded belt that loops loosely around the hips twice. Gorgeous.

Glassons DOUBLE WRAP SKINNY STUD BELT (Black) NZD$16.99

Glassons DOUBLE WRAP SKINNY STUD BELT (Silvery-Gray) NZD$16.99

And it’s all good to have a great outfit, but you also need great makeup to pull the whole shebang off!

I bought Kleancolor products for the first time a few days ago, and quite liked them, so I snapped up yet another inexpensive makeup treat. Check out my new liquid eyeliner!

Kleancolor Eyeliner Precision (403) (Liquid) Black NZD$6.00

A few days ago I bought the Kleancolor black matt polish, and today I followed up with buying a hot pink, orange and white polish to add to my colection. Hot!

Kleancolour Nail Lacquer NZD$6.00

Another thing I found is just bloody handy. The Kleancolor Wizard Pads are small, round pads that you can keep in your handbag that completely wipe away nail polish from your nails. No fuss, no mess. Easy.

Kleancolor Wizard Pads (Lemon or Cucumber scented) NZD$3.00

Happy Easter everybody! I hope you had as good a holiday as meeeeeeeee! 😀

April Madness – What’s On My iPod Monday, Apr 5 2010

Just a quick posting to update you as to what I’m listening to on my iPod at the moment! Some of my picks are popular, some not so much. Hope you find something that YOU like in the process!

Possibility by Lykke Li. This song was played in the movie Twilight Saga: New Moon and I totally fell in love with it. So sombre, so haunting.

Telephone by Lady GaGa FT. Beyonce. Okay okay, everyone is listening to this at the moment. But I love it so much I just had to give it a mention! Plus the video clip is so cool.

Bad Things by Jace Everett. A bloody AMAZING song, this guys voice is pure sex. You may recognize it as the intro theme for the TV series True Blood.

Blue Eyes Blue by Eric Clapton. I have loved this gorgeous song for years and years, and have started playing it again. In my top 10 most loved songs.

Behind Blue Eyes by Limp Bizkit. I guess I’m loving the blue eyes at the moment, huh? But another haunting melody. Everybody knows it as the movie theme for Halle Berry’s Gothika.

More Than Words by Extreme. Relaxes me every time I listen to it. 🙂

American Pie by Don McLean. I couldn’t find an official video, so here’s the best quality clip that I could find!

The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room) by FOTC: Flight Of The Conchords. EPIC EPIC EPIC!

So many good songs out there, both new and old. There’s just nothing better than tuning the world out and getting absorbed into music that you love! Hope you found a gem in there, or found an old fave that you haven’t listened to in ages. Until next time!

Abra Cadavre Jewellery Monday, Apr 5 2010

Recently, a New Zealand graphic designer started up his own jewellery collection. And I’ll tell you what – it’s bloody amazing!

The name gives you a hint at the tone of the collection (Abra Cadavre Jewellery – clever, isn’t it?) but for those of you that don’t get it, it’s a nod towards the macabre. Some of the pieces include Voodoo Doll Earrings, a Zombie Cameo and Severed Skull Studs. Dark, sexy, but still beautiful. Also, each piece is handmade and finely crafted.

I am lucky enough to have purchased a few things so far from the Abra Cadavre website, something for me and something for a friend. I don’t know who was more pleased, me or her!

The pieces aren’t expensive, starting from NZD$10.00 and going up to NZD$110.00. There are earrings, pendants, bracelets and cameos, with more being added to the product range all the time. If you like your jewellery with a bit of attitude that strays from the norm, then this is the range for you!

Headache Tips Monday, Apr 5 2010

I just thought I’d post a few tips for curing/abating headaches and migraines, seeing as I get them quite often and so have a few suggestions to share.

Obviously, pain killers help. But I’d advise against things like Nurofen and Voltaren, despite the fact they can work, because they cause real damage to your stomach lining. (If you have to use them a fair bit over a day, or over a few days, then they can cause you anything from nausea to internal bleeding.) I stick with high strength Panadol as it doesn’t cause any of these issues, plus it’s not addictive like products that contain Codene. If you suffer from migraines though, you will need to talk to a Doctor about which prescription medicine is right for you. Now on to a few natural ways.

Panadol Extra

When I get a headache, I always get either an ice pack, or wrap ice cubes in a towel. Then I sit back and press it to my forehead and over my eyes. This usually relieves the pain tenfold.

Ice Therapy

A lot of headaches are caused from back and neck tension. A really good way to relieve this (Duh!) is to get a massage. Wether it be by a professional, or your partner, it can really help release all of the tight muscles that are causing your pain.

Massage

Another way to release neck tension that could be aggravating your headaches is by using heat-packs to soothe those aching muscles. Don’t use the packs on your head though, this will make the headache worse in my experience.

Heat Pack

Acupuncture/Accupuncture is a well known Chinese practice where trained specialists insert fine needles into different points all over the body to cure an assortment of ailments. I know a lot of people who have used this procedure to help manage everything from back pain, to injuries and, of course, headaches. I have tried this too, and it really does help. (Hurts the pocket a little bit, though!)

Accupuncture/Acupuncture

A nifty little product I found in a chemist that now lives in my handbag is the HeadOn stick. There is one for Migraines and one for plain old headaches. You take the top off, roll the stick up and smear the clear paste onto your forehead. (Definitely a “do it alone” kind of thing!) The goo has a cooling effect on your skin that can last for hours on end, and feels marvelous. I find it really helpful; it works much the same way ice does.

HeadOn: Migraine/Headache Relief Stick

Another thing I would recommend is looking at your diet. I find that when I have too much sugar or caffeine, I can expect a headache soon after. Lack of sleep and dehydration is another way to increase your chances of setting one off, or not getting rid of one quickly.

For you fellow headache sufferers – good luck! And let me know what helps you recover from these nasty little buggers.

Hugh Grant – My Foppish Older Man Crush Sunday, Apr 4 2010

We all know who Hugh Grant is. He’s the lovable jerk, Daniel Cleaver, from the movie’s Bridget Jones’s Diary 1 & 2. He is the dorky sap from Mickey Blue Eyes, and the foppish English dweeb from the famous Four Weddings And A Funeral. Over his long-spanning acting career, and a successful one at that, he has racked up countless roles that have showcased his acting talent, wittiness, ingenious facial expressions and great hair. (I’m sorry, but he does, even if he is stuck in the past with his chosen styles!)

Born Hugh John Mungo Grant on September the 9th 1960, in Hammersmith, London, he earned himself a scholarship to esteemed Oxford University where he enrolled in acting courses. Since then, his career has been on the up and up. His roles aren’t usually serious, gritty journey’s; he often portrays affable, eccentric and witty characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. His most common film trend is that of the leading man in a romantic comedy – working alongside actresses such as Drew Barrymore, Mandy Moore, Andy MacDowell, Julia Roberts, Emma Thompson and Sandra Bullock to name but a few.

He’s also the guy who got caught with prostitute Divine Brown in 1995, whilst dating Elizabeth Hurley. (He was consequently arrested for lewd behavior and fined.) Which isn’t exactly sexy buutttt…

I’m coming out of the closet here. Hugh Grant is my all time older man crush. From his quaffed hair, sparkling blue eyes and crooked grin, to his sexy English accent, his ability to be so witty and lovable onscreen and his quirky personality. I just can’t help but fall for him all over again whenever I watch one of his films. Age difference much? But I don’t care! Haha, he just does it for me!

Every girl I know has an older man crush (George Clooney being the most common!) and Hugh is mine. YUM-O!

Beauty Review Saturday, Apr 3 2010

Every girl loves looking great, especially when it comes to her makeup. We want to cover up our imperfections, make our pretty eyes stand out and our lips look kissable, all the while trying desperately to keep it all as natural seeming as possible. (Boys, FYI – harder than it looks!) I try to stick to a budget and so have opted to not always buy MAC/Dior etc makeup unless I can really afford to. Which means finding cheaper options that still work, and work WELL.

I have found a couple of new products recently that have really impressed me, so I thought I’d share.

RADIESSENCE Foundation

I bought RADIESSENCE on a whim really, because I had seen the Ads on TV and had heard people talking about it over the past few months. I needed a new foundation so thought I’d try it out. And I’ll tell you what – I am extremely happy I did! I have only used it a few times so far, but each time everyone comments on how “fresh-faced” I look, and one friend also stated she didn’t even click that I was wearing foundation! WIN WIN WIN! The foundation itself is a creamy blend with an SPF30 sunscreen mixed in, and is so good I didn’t need to use a concealer AT ALL – it covered up everything! Under-eye circles, blemishes, redskin. I also found that, as long as my skin is fresh and clean, there is absolutely no caking or build up.  There are four shades to choose from and it comes with a brush and an applicator sponge, which is really handy. For NZD$49.90 this is an extremely well-priced product that covers just as well as those big-name brands do. (If not better than some!)

Revlon: Just Bitten

This little lip enhancer is a roll-on, long lasting lip stain. You roll it on in the morning, let it set over a few minutes, then apply your normal balm/gloss. All day the colour will stay, because your lips are (duh) stained. All you have to do it keep applying your gloss, if you choose to. It’s easy, it’s sexy, and the name reminds me of Twilight, so I love it all the more! 😉  Why is this better than a long-lasting lipstick, you ask? Well, lipstick is thick, and if you have even the smallest amount of dry skin the lipstick cakes on and enhances it. Lip stain doesn’t do this in the slightest. This is a limited edition release for Revlon, so they no longer sell it on their site, BUT a lot of chemists, online shops etc still stock it. For  NZD$16.99 (sometimes cheaper, sometimes more expensive) it’s not a bad buy really. It lasts forever, and you only need to apply a little bit each morning as it lasts most, if not all of the day.

Vaseline Lip Therapy

We all know about Vaseline, but let me tell you, it is SO handy to have in your handbag. As a gloss over your matt lipstick or lip stain, it works beautifully. The particular type that I use (green tin, see above) has Aloe added, which means it helps also to keep my lips feeling soft and supple. Other tricks for this cheap (NZD$4.00) little beauty is that it is great for tidying eyebrows and emergency patch ups for when you’re out, go to the bathroom and look into the mirror, only to find dry skin! Plus, it can easily be stuffed into a small handbag or even your pocket. Genius! Have a look at the product itself here.

Chi Chi Eye Palette's

I really like Chi Chi cosmetics. Farmers Department store introduced me to the range, and I have never been disappointed. The product I am using obsessively at the moment is one of their Eye Pallette sets (mine has blue, pink, dusky rose, red-orange, gold and black). For NZD$16.99 this is a cheap eyeshadow that not only goes on well and stays on for the entire day without fading or smudging, but its sturdy little snap case never ever opens in your handbag and spills everywhere like most other cosmetics do. I mostly use the gold and the black, which are rich and sexy – LOVE! Check out the Chi Chi website for the full range.

L'OREAL Glam Shine Lip Gloss

You can’t beat a good lipgloss. L’Oreal’s Glam Shine range isn’t cheap, but also isn’t going to break the bank at NZD$21.00 (the price can vary depending on the store though, of course). There is a good range (I have most of them!) and it goes on smoothly, with minimal smudging and absolutely no stickiness. It does come off on your coffee cup/boyfriends collar, but oh well. That’s the price of beauty! You can find this product in most Supermarkets, Chemists and online beauty sites.

Kleancolor Nail Polish (Black #5)

In a perfect world, I would have enough money to only buy O.P.I. nail polishes. They are great BUT… a bit too expensive unfortunately. My next best thing? Well, I found it today, put it on, and am totally chuffed! Kleancolor’s nail polishes go on so smoothly, with no flaking, lumps or blobbing. I am really impressed. The RRP is about NZD$9.99, but I got it on sale today for NZD$6.00 at a Postie+ store. It does need a sealer coat on top to stop it from peeling, but for a change-a-day type polish it’s good.

So, that’s it for now kids. Hopefully I have helped you in some way to improve your makeup range while saving you some money as well! Until next time…
